Accucadd program errors arising from Windows 98 display hardware and driver problems.

Graphics hardware and driver inconsistencies can result in one or more of the following problems:

bullet

Your computer locks up when erasing/part erasing lines in a zoomed view.

bullet

Item selector cursor displays as a dot (no square box).

bullet

Selection markers do not appear on the selected element.

bullet

The Library-Set Path index "thumbnail" is missing.

All these problems involve display hardware and/or driver inconsistencies. Windows display drivers are critical, and you should always ensure that the display driver that you are using:

  1. Matches your hardware. If you have a "Super System Mega" display board, ensure that you are using a "Super System Mega" display board driver.

  2. Matches your operating system. Do not use Windows NT drivers with Windows 98, or Windows 98 drivers with Windows ME, and so on. Always use a driver intended for the type and version of Windows that you are actually using.

  3. Is the latest version, Manufactures change drivers all the time, often in an attempt to fix a problem. Updated drivers are usually available free of charge over the internet. To reduce the risk of getting a virus, only download from a manufacturer's site - avoid third party sites, and sites of obscure or unknown ownership.

A work-around solution is to change the Windows 98 Graphics Hardware accelerator setting. To access this you must either:

bullet

be able to see a clear area of your Windows 98 Desktop (no icons). Right click to get the floating menu (below), then click on Properties .

or:

bullet

Click Start - Settings - Control Panel and open Display.

Either way, you’ll get the Display Properties dialog, (below). Click on the Settings tab, see below.

Click on the.Advanced... button, and you'll get the display system Properties dialog, below. Click on the Performance tab.

Look in the Graphics area at the Hardware acceleration control. As shown above it is set to Full acceleration. Drag the slider to the None position, as shown below

.

If this fixes the problem, you may want to try moving the slider to one of the intermediate positions. On typical Pentium 2 and faster computers we have not found that the Hardware acceleration function impacts performance in any way.
